Plant a bulb for Literacy! The Friends of the Library invite all Library supporters to come out to help complete the Library’s new landscaping by planting spring daffodil bulbs.

The Storm of 1913 was the deadliest and most destructive natural disaster ever to hit the Great Lakes. It took the largest toll in terms of lives and ships of any storm in Great Lakes history. The storm raged for 4 days across Lakes Superior and Huron with some of the worst losses occurring along the shores of Huron County. Learn about the ships of that time and the unique weather events that led to this tragic disaster. Our presenter, David McDonald, is a trustee for the Great Lakes Lore Maritime Museum in Rogers City, Michigan and a member of the Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse Society.

This month's selection is "Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman” by Jon Krakauer. Pat Tillman walked away from a multimillion-dollar NFL contract to join the Army and became an icon of post-9/11 patriotism. When he was killed in Afghanistan two years later, a legend was born. But the real Pat Tillman was much more remarkable, and considerably more complicated than the public knew.

This month’s feature is “How to Train Your Dragon”, about Hiccup, a Viking teenager, who wants to hunt dragons, but doesn't fit in with his tribe's tradition of heroic dragon slayers. His world gets turned upside down when he encounters a dragon that challenges him and his fellow Vikings to see the world from a different point of view. The movie is free (PG/96 min.) and popcorn will be served.

Because the Bad Axe High School is performing Hairspray for its spring musical, the library will be showing the movie version of this popular show. It's 1962, and change is in the air in Baltimore. Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion--to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, "The Corny Collins Show" and is transformed overnight from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. The Library will be showing its monthly movie on Saturday, May 14th at 1:30. This month’s feature is “Karate Kid” (PG/140 min.). Dre Parker finds himself in China after his mother's latest career move. He and classmate Mei Ying immediately fall for each other, but cultural differences make this friendship impossible. Even worse, his feelings make an enemy of class bully Cheng, who is quite adept at kung fu. Dre turns to maintenance man Mr. Han, who is secretly a kung fu master, and learns that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm. However, Dre realizes that this may be the fight of his life. The movie is free and popcorn will be served.

This month's selection is "Every Last One” by Anna Quindlen. Mary Beth Latham is first and foremost a mother whose three teenaged children come first, before her career or her life as a doctor’s wife. So, when one of her sons becomes depressed, Mary Beth focuses on him and is blindsided by a shocking act of violence. The Friends of the Library will hold its annual book sale at Old City Hall during the Hatchet Festival. Hard and soft cover books of all genres for all ages will be available. Big Dreams in Sports for ages 5-8. Hour will include stories and races out in the park.

Renowned Performance Speed Painter Martina Hahn will perform storytelling of a classic children’s book and then paint a 5 foot canvas of one of the story’s characters in just 6 minutes (all ages)
